Their name derives from the Occitan word oc meaning "yes," distinguishing them from northern French speakers who used oïl (modern oui).Historically, the region was part of Gallia Narbonensis under Roman rule and later influenced by Visigoths, Franks, and Arabs. The area was a stronghold of the Cathari (Albigensians), a Christian sect deemed heretical by the Catholic Church, leading to the Albigensian Crusade in the 13th century. The region was eventually absorbed into the French crown, losing its political autonomy by the late 13th century.
