Introduction / History

The Languedocians are a cultural and linguistic group native to southern France, particularly the historical region of Languedoc, which includes parts of Hérault, Gard, Ardèche, Haute-Loire, Lozère, Tarn, Tarn-et-Garonne, Haute-Garonne, and Ariège. Their name derives from the Occitan word oc meaning "yes," distinguishing them from northern French speakers who used oïl (modern oui).Historically, the region was part of Gallia Narbonensis under Roman rule and later influenced by Visigoths, Franks, and Arabs. The area was a stronghold of the Cathari (Albigensians), a Christian sect deemed heretical by the Catholic Church, leading to the Albigensian Crusade in the 13th century. The region was eventually absorbed into the French crown, losing its political autonomy by the late 13th century.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Modern Languedocians live in both urban and rural settings across southern France. Traditional livelihoods included viticulture, agriculture, and crafts. Today, many work in tourism, education, and service industries. The region is known for its Mediterranean cuisine, featuring olive oil, garlic, and pork fat, and for wines like muscatels and blistelle. The Occitan language, particularly the Languedocien dialect, is a key cultural marker. Though French is dominant, about 10% are fluent in Languedocien and 20% have some understanding of it. The language is endangered but remains a symbol of regional identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Languedocians are predominantly Christian, with Roman Catholicism being the main faith. However, there are significant Protestant enclaves, especially in Lozère and Gard. The region also has a notable presence of Freemasons and Communist Party adherents. Commonly, people have a secular outlook.Historically, the area was a center of French Protestantism, and religious tensions led to uprisings like the Camisard rebellion in the 18th century. Today, religious practice varies, with many identifying culturally rather than devoutly.

What Are Their Needs?

Though nominally Christian, many Languerdocians may benefit from deeper engagement with faith.
